OK, so I honestly don't think I have ever read a New Gods story. I feel kind of bad because I love Kirby's work and as any comic fan would say, great work.  Any way, my exposure to Mr. Miracle and Barda is pretty limited and what I have seen is Barda is pretty straight forward and Scott, well he just doesn't always seem to get it. But here's my take.

The Fourth World is my favorite Jack Kirby story, and Mr. Miracle might be my favorite book out of the bunch.  There's so much to love: the main male character is the conscientious objector and the lady is the one who throws hands.  Also, lots of nifty gadgets and a great pair of antagonists in Granny Goodness and that miniature Hitler dude.

After reading a Jack Kirby comic, other comics just seem too refined and tame.

My favorite Charlton Heston movie is easily Planet of the Apes...big fan of that series, I own the box set.  His hammy, outraged arrogance is perfect for that movie.  The Tim Burton one was laughably bad, but the Charlton Heston cameo was fun.

Bonus: my initial idea for this theme...I didn't want to only do this because it's not a drawing, but it made me laugh out loud when I thought of it.  I need to stop reading Reddit.

Originally I was going to do this big thing with shattered glass and each of the avengers and villains... yeah, I ran out of time. So here is this thing. You can see the assets here and a WIP here. Also the color might be a bit funky. I upgraded to CS5 and I'm having trouble saving out jpegs with the correct color profile.

This cover redo was inspired by the video game Choplifter! specifically the sega master system version which was the best version of its time. I feel like some times its sad to look back and see how much video games have changed, but than I look back and see how little comics have changed and thats sad too.

OK so normally, opposed to some people's beliefs, I'm not really all that political. But every four years the mud slinging begins and everyone focuses on BS stances that they don't plan on following once they get in office. Personally I think this is most politicians. No one ever really focuses on big issues that are more important long term then short term. So the idea of them fighting among themselves is pretty much what this cover was about so it popped in my head. Plus I love how as Americans no (except for the good voters) pay attention to politics until a presidential election year. Me included.

 I punted on Rich last time, and I know this idea was one he's been percolating for awhile so Superhero Album Covers is my theme for Ketchup week.  I'm more a fan of East Coast and hippy-hop (mopey underground raps) but Straight Outta Compton's got plenty to like.

So with some downtime and it being a "Ketchup" week I figured I'd do the Minions of Apocalypse since I really really wanted to draw Kalibak. Here he be, and I have to say was actually a lot of fun to draw. Kalibak always reminded me of something like the bastard child of a troll and werewolf or something with his huge head of hair/fur. Kind of want to do more of him but set it up a long the lines of a happy go lucky guy skipping through flowers or something... not sure why?

PopMusik; "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders (as Alien)" by Josh Purple

It's a fast rough draft, but it was the idea that I wanted to get across  (plenty I could fix / finish).

Since Ziggy Stardust was an alien (well, he's the human manifestation of an alien)  I picked ...  :)  .   Forgive me Rich if you were thinking of us doing a take on 'Tonight.'  I was guessing that picking any Bowie album cover would work.  To be more accurate I should have picked E.T. with a guitar, -since Ziggy's message was peace and love ( with just a little bit of sex and drugs mixed in :D ).  "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders" was 1972, and Alien was 1979 (I think), again a near miss, but why not give the legend a violent twist into the future, -Bowie was certainly ahead of his time.  Maybe the alien needs purple boots and red hair :) .

So just went through a bunch of album covers and well this Rolling Stones cover is pretty recognizable and when I saw it I immediately thought of Venom and how his tongue is always all over the place. Awesome choice Rich, had tons of ideas I still want to do because of this.

Coke was the big, new awesome in the seventies. Nobody really knew how badly it can fuck your priorities up until they were already pink-eyed dope wraiths, which is where Bowie found himself in the latter half of the decade.

Being inspired by the electronic music of the day, he moved out to Berlin to kick blow and reinvent the weirdness. The result was the ‘Berlin Trilogy’, three super experimental records that popped many a ear cherry to the art-rock sound. The first of which, 1977’s ‘Low’, was followed by ‘Heroes’ and ‘Lodger’.

These three albums directly influenced New Wave, Industrial and Post Punk (or early alternative, depending on your labeling). If you came up musically in the late eighties-early nineties, you can hear the provenance of everything you thought was cool here.

Game Night: DuckTales by Rich Flood

My uncle’s mentally disabled.

He’s got size 16 shoes and probably weighs like 250 pounds and used to have a nasty fucking temper. When my cousins and I were really young, (not babies, but still pretty little) he would chase us down, trample us then grab our heads and shake the shit out of us until an adult would call him off. Suffice to say we were scared shitless of him and wouldn’t try and provoke him, except that he had a room absolutely full of cartoons and cool shit, which despite it being potentially life threatening, we tried to get into all the time.

I was in third or fourth grade this when this game came out. Now, my uncle had a shit load of NES games, including this one. I had already beaten it a few times, and – being a little older - was able to talk my way into his room and play this game with him. Later that developed into being able to come into his room to play a bunch of games, but he always liked watching me beat this one, either because I got to where I could beat it quickly without dying, or so he could shriek when you found Gizmoduck.

He still lets me into his room.

Game Night, "Call of Cthulhu." By Josh Purple

I'm guessing most of you guys have heard of that game :) .  I've always been a fan of Cthulhu art, and I plan on animating this.  Custom work, made this in 3dsMax 2012, rendered in iRay 2.0, rigged, skinned, UV'd, textured, etc.  A screen shot from Max;

The small boxes along the tentacles = the rigging.  One photometric light is out of frame, -the back light.  The bottom light is visible.  Created some darkness depth using a Z-depth pass (tentacles going into darkness).  It's not a 'classic' Cthulhu god, more of a variation inspired by other lovely, creepy skull, tentacle Cthulhu works.

Tim Burton: Mars Attacks, by Eric Schuster

I admire Tim Burton for being prolific and getting to pretty much run down a checklist of dream projects.  I'm not a fan of most of his work, but I really loved Ed Wood, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, and of course the giant ball of crazy that was MARS ATTACKS.  Mars Attacks was awesome.  Growing up I was unaware of the gruesome series of trading cards that the movie was based on...apparently the work of comic book supergenius Wally Wood.
