Star Trek: The Next Generation All Good Things...Episode 171-172

I'm here! Just really busy! I actually have real projects...but once I thought of this idea I really wanted to do it!

I chose this episode because I thought it would be a perfect excuse to use a psychedelic band poster-it sounded pretty trippy! And I loooove doing the lettering.

The Savage Sword of Conan (tee hee!)

Leif Ericsson vs. GIANT SQUIRREL

First, I want to take a moment to thank you all for the wonderful posts this week! You guys really did a fabulous job. Thanks for pushing the theme further and creating some really great work.

Now you can all yell at me for being late for my own post #fail. Here is Leif Ericsson fending off a giant squirrel. No wonder they went back to Scandinavia!

I did this all in brush pen which I am slowly getting the hang of, though I think I do prefer my drawing materials to be stiff and much, much thinner...

The Man Without Fear by Beth Davis

I was introduced to Daredevil and my favorite comic artist, David Mack, at the same time when he did a 5-issue DD series (that was mostly about a secondary character named Echo). So I tried to pay homage to DD and Mr. Mack this week.

You know how you go through a love-hate cycle with art? Well, this ended on the Hate side of things. There are about 20 things I wish had turned out differently, but I jumped off the deep end, and stepped outside of my comfort zone so I guess I shouldn't worry about it.

David Mack is the reason I embraced watercolors in college, he was doing radically different things at the time. I think I have followed his style though it is choppy. I kind of rushed at the end.

Oh, and the circles are supposed to be echolocation soundwaves.

The Conchistador by Beth Davis

Sorry to be late. This week has been nuts, so all I've got is a sketch.

I never really was into He-Man, I was watching Care Bears, and My Little Pony. It may not have even been on TV by that time. But my husband grew up with it and is a big fan, so he was able to help me think up a few ideas.

He pointed out that Merman is more of his own villain than a Skeletor lackey, and that he has no direct opposite "good guy", and suggested an Aquatic hero. The idea behind him is a mixture of old-school diving gear and Aquaman. The headgear is some sort of saltwater purification device to make it easier to breathe, and he has armor made from shells.

Catwoman by Beth Davis

Ladies in the house-represent!!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Batman, favorite character hands down, can beat the shit out of Superman anytime he wants with the kryptonite ring and he is mortal, baby. No superpowers.

It was a decision between Harley Quinn and Catwoman. I love them both equally but I had more fun with the Catwoman sketches. Plus, she is an interesting "villain". She starts out bad but tries to be good. She really is her own worst enemy-more than Batmans'.

Tried something new here. Arm was feeling wobbly and didn't feel like going through 3-4 versions of inked drawings (which I tend to do, perfectionist to a fault. Plus, I was really digging the linework), so I drew it in reverse and inverted the colors in Photoshop rather than colored in everything with graphite. There are a few spots (face, illuminated arm) where I left them alone to pull some light in. The light source is supposed to be the reflected light off the pedestal so hitting her in the face and radiating outward. The forearm is in front of it, so it is silhouetted, but that back arm seems like she's got her sleeve rolled up. Couldn't figure out what to do with it-wasn't sure how it would turn out. I think I should play with this idea more, make it work for me.

Rich Flood by Beth Davis

Sorry this took so long. I was really puzzled over the best way to do this. Rich provided some great resource material and I was baffled at the best way to present it. It's a long story through the process but I'm happy where it ended up.

-Rich is from Alaska! So I put in mountains.
-He did environmental conservation there, hence the PSA.
-And his last name is Flood, so I thought it would be fun to incorporate that into a literal interpretation. (and he encouraged me to "embrace the weird".)

He, like many of us I'm sure, was drawn to comics at a young age and aspired to become an influence to others. He points his finger a lot too, and both of these made me think of the WWII Uncle Sam recruitment posters. Then I thought Smokey would be a more integrateable (is that a word?) component but still fall in the nostalgic poster theme. So Rich has ousted Smokey, who is in a boat, and a shovel is kind of shaped like a paddle so why not?

Josh, thanks for picking a theme that goes above and beyond made-up characters, and Rich, hope you like it, you are an interesting character!

You know I just thought of something I could do and went with it. Am I the guy that gets people presents that he would actually really like himself? Yeah, but this isn't necessarily that situation. Beth told me she likes Northlanders, a great comic set in the Viking age. I also like what I've read of that book and definitely that genre.
She also digs Batman, Black Canary, strong coffee, beer, and arts and crafts. I hope I touched on a few of those topics- i.e. indirectly. It was great fun.

Spiderman Villains: Mysterio by Beth Davis

Let me go ahead and answer some of those questions for you:

-Yes, it is 1:30 AM EST
-Yes, this is watercolor
-Yes, I am insane

Now that that's cleared up, here is Mysterio! I am NOT a Spiderman fan. Too much emo drama. But, Mysterio has a neat fishbowl on his head. And a nice, unusual complimentary color scheme that was begging to be painted. Also, I saw he had a trident in a few pictures, and I've never drawn one before.

I am very tired. I think this shows that I was rushing. But, for cranking it out in 2 days, I don't think I can complain. It was a lot of fun.
