Mr Holiday

Well, it is the holiday season & I love the monster theme, so here's an oldie for the holidays :) !  The idea was a Dr.Jekyll & Mr.Hyde character.  Just that he'd turn into a T-Rex monster.

Happy Holidays all!

ZBrush Head by Josh Purple

This kinda' sucks :) (well... not just kinda' :D ), but it's a Sunday night, so I thought I'd post up my draft / learning work with a ZBrush head (indeed, I'm a complete newbie with ZBrush).  Hopefully I'll be able to post-up some decent progress/improvement in the next few months (years, ...decades :)  ).

Monster; "Samurai Umber Hulk Mind Flayer," by Josh Purple

The Samurai  Umber Hulk Mind Flayer :) .   The perfect monster bad guy for Zatoichi to defeat (since Zato is blind, he would be immune to the Umber Hulk's four eyes).  Lots of good brain eating scenes would be a must.

Original Work: "Dudes," by joshpurple

No doubt, this is my most original work, style, concept, etc.  Since before I can remember ( like.. ~ 3 or 4 years old?), this is me creating art; pen, pencil, crayon, on paper, etc. doodling creatures/characters quickly.  Hopefully, if you can see this at full scale, -it's pretty much the scale at which I draw these characters out.  I would LOVE to doodle out pages and pages and pages of characters like this, all connecting along 8.5" x 11" sheets of paper.  I've attempted to do comics, cartoons, children's books, posters, t-shirts, etc. with my characters (even a company once, "Dudes by Josh"), all resulted in complete failure :D .

Minions of Apokolips: Takion, by Josh Purple

As I was searching through the Inhabitants of New Genesis, I found Takion fighting (what must be) Godzilla :) , so I picked Takion.  Guess I made him a bit happy and goofy :D .

Cover to Cover: The Mighty Thor Annual #2 (1966), cover start by Josh Purple

Update 4

Update 3

Update 2

Start

What I have so far..., with my vast intelligence I manged to delete all of my path work without knowing it :D .  Luckily I had this done (colors filled in) at a fairly large file size.  I was doing everything using paths and shapes, I'm guessing as I was cutting out some selections, I deleted the paths.  Still, there's a bit of a clue as to what direction I'm going with this :) .   More soon.

Trek edition; "Heart of Glory," by Josh Purple

Inspired by AC DC's 'Lock up your daughters' poster.  AC DC seemed fitting for this episode, -'warrior-like' intensity, etc.  (that's in 'bernyKlingon' font).   Very tempted to go with the image of Wharf doing the howl during the Klingon death ritual :) .

Romantic Kirby Cover: "The Hammer And The Honeymoon" by Josh Purple

I didn't do this week's AWESOME theme justice, only had time for a very rough cartoony sketch.  Just a little twisted father & son action :D !  (made sure to move the cape just enough to reveal the mighty hammer)

Einstein vs UmberHulk, by Josh Purple

second draft

Didn't get as much done as I planned... Breaking Bad, Venture Bros, Boardwalk Empire, :)
(more soon)

first draft

Einstein vs an UmberHulk, WIP.  Yup, this is just the start.  I wanted to post it now, since I know I'll continue working on it for awhile.  I'll be sure to post up a more completed version later tonight (maybe even early morning :) ).  Indeed, I was a complete nerd/dork in highschool, -played TONS of Dungeons and Dragons, and I loved it!  Hahaha :D .  As the DM one of my all time favorite things to do was create monsters that the party would encounter.  I picked an UmberHulk since it's a huge, hulking creature that's gone through many artistic variations/concepts.  So this is my own little twist to it.  I might make it larger.  I see it as a creature that is a cross between a; reptile/insect/dinosaur/crustacean/ -and I could see a version adding a Cthulhu influence.  I picked Einstein since his theory is in 'battle' in recent news, and because he is an easier historical figure to recognize.  I'm making him a bit cartoony (big-head,etc.), since it's a bit of a silly battle (LUV working on this :) ).

Darth Vader by Josh Purple

I'm late! Sorry!  Since last night I've been trying to post on AF, and I just could not get the Blogger 'new post' page to load... excuses, excuses, :) .  But, I decided to use FireFox 6, and YAAA it works!

Feel free to call this a total CHEAT :D !  But, I couldn't resist.  At first I was thinking of doing a cartoony fun Vader, until I let myself get sucked into a 3D version (and that went from doing a Lego Vader to this photoreal render of Vader).  Spent waaaaay more time on this that I planned on, but hope it looks good.

I used 3ds Max 2012 64bit, hdri set-up, iray renderer, based my model & modeling work on Shatgan's 3D model (from The 3D Studio.com.  His 'read me' file shows his name as Wilson.  My Thanks to Wilson!).
I found an image from the hallway of the Death Star, put that in for all of the reflections, used an hdri image in the environment to add to the lighting & shadows, went with a gamma correct workflow,etc. Set-up shot;
Added a photometric light, casting slightly blue light (and a reflecting whiteboard), in front of Vader, used some Depth of Field, used Arch & Design materials, realistic scale, etc. Another Set-up shot;

Then I let the scene render in iray.   BUT, again, this is not a 3D blog, so I completely failed :D .  Forgive me!  I was wanting to pay tribute to the 'original' Darth Vader.

Here comes DAREDEVIL, the man without fear, by Josh Puprle

Some more silly fun :) .  I was thinking, enhanced senses, so... big nose, big ears, big hands, -and that's when I thought, he's an imp!  Used this cover for reference.  Not that it's fitting, but I thought it would be kinda' fun to have him as an evil little imp ( I should have given him a goatee).

Jesse Ventura vs. Michele bachmann by Josh Purple

If only Michele had gone into pro wrestling :) .  I was trying to think of something that might represent Minnesota, with a good silly twist.  Jesse's quote is one of his famous quotes, and if Michele has not already said that, I'm sure she will :D .

Create Your Own Master: Orkathor by Josh Purple

Orko, Megator, and Panthor were hanging out getting wide on catnip and cannabis, when Orko lost it and starting casting out of control Polymorph spells (everyone lost their saving throws).  Orkathor is a good guy, doofus (goofy smile), rasta, who likes to mark his territory in the traditional cat-like way.

... I don't think I'll enter this in the contest :) , but it was fun to do (and I got my damn shadow wrong..).

Harley Quinn by Josh Purple

It was between Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn for me.  And Thank You Beth for being very kind & offering encouragement on doing Catwoman after your awesome Catwoman work :)  (not to forget, Spiderman -for a bit- kicked Superman's butt, so Catwoman could arguably do the same :D ).  I was guessing that Catwoman and Harley Quinn both have a similar type of build, and I thought it might be fitting for Harley Quinn doing the 'silly hands/ears' on the Bat signal, so I went with Harley Quinn.

( and the insanely huge original sized version )
*it's ~ 5 MB file size :)
